Frankie Andreu To Lead Univest Cyclosportif 100K
Former Tour de France Rider Also To Be Commentator for LIVE Broadcast of Univest Grand Prix on 69 WFMZ-TV
SOUDERTON, Pa, August 29, 2006 – Sparta Cycling, Inc. and Univest Corporation today announced that nine-time Tour de France rider and former member of the US Postal Service Professional Cycling Team Frankie Andreu will lead the Univest Cyclosportif 100k presented by Bicycling Magazine. Andreu, who retired from professional cycling in 2000 after a 12-year career in Europe, is now a sports journalist and television commentator. He will also be announcing the live television broadcast of the Univest Grand Prix on 69 WFMZ-TV.
A recreational ride to benefit the Indian Creek Foundation for the developmentally disabled, the Cyclosportif will take place on the famed Univest Grand Prix race-course. Leaving from the start/finish line in Souderton at 8 a.m. on Saturday, September 9, Andreu will lead the ‘Cyclos” on a true European-style ride through southeastern Pennsylvania. Andreu continues this tradition in 2006, following fellow American cycling champions Jonathan Vaughters, Floyd Landis, and Marty Nothstein, all of whom have led the Cyclosportif in years past.
“The Cyclosportif is a great European cycling tradition, one that I’ve witnessed many times in my career as a pro in Europe,” said Andreu. “I’m excited to lead the ride and see how the course compares to those that I raced in Europe, while meeting hundreds of Pennsylvania’s cycling enthusiasts and giving back to the community.”
In addition to his insight in the sport gleaned from years as a racer and team manager, Andreu’s experience as a television commentator will be showcased on the first-ever live television broadcast of the Univest Grand Prix. The broadcast will be live on 69 WFMZ-TV from 12:00 noon until 3:00 p.m.

Spectators in Souderton race day will be able to follow the action from start to finish on a giant screen television that will be visible from the downtown area. A world-wide audience will also be able to follow the action at www.wfmz.com from 10:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
“I’m thrilled that Frankie is joining us this year as both Cyclosportif ride leader and as the voice of the Univest Grand Prix,” said John Eustice, president of Sparta Cycling, Inc. and promoter of the Univest Grand Prix. “Frankie is one of the finest bike racers America has ever produced and his participation in the event this year continues the race’s tradition of honoring America’s established cycling stars while showcasing the future champions of the sport.”
Bicycling magazine has joined the Univest Cyclosportif 100K as title sponsor for 2006. The Valley Forge Convention and Visitors Bureau will also support this year’s ride.
