Floyd Landis Visits Landis Supermarket and Leads Ride to Celebrate The Univest Grand Prix’s 10th Anniversary
SOUDERTON, Pa., June 29, 2007 – The Univest Grand Prix is returning to Souderton for its 10th anniversary on Saturday, September 8. In celebration of the anniversary, Floyd Landis, 2006 Tour de France Champion, participated in an event today at the Landis Supermarket, located in the Shelly Square Shopping Center in Harleysville, Upper Salford Township.
The event included a press conference, a midday bicycle ride for the public and an autograph session. Landis is a long-time supporter of the Univest Grand Prix, having led the Cyclosportif in year's past – the recreational ride that raises money for Indian Creek Foundation – and joining spectators at the 2006 event. Landis is currently touring the country in support of his newly published autobiography "Positively False: The Real Story of How I Won the Tour de France". In this candid memoir, he tells the story of an improbable journey from his hard-working Mennonite upbringing in Farmersville, Pa. to his dramatic win in the 2006 Tour de France and the challenging months that have followed. "Positively False" was released earlier this week by publisher Simon Spotlight Entertainment.
"The Univest Grand Prix continues to be one of the most anticipated community events in Bucks and Montgomery counties, and it is considered to be one of the crown jewels in North American cycling," said William S. Aichele, chairman, president and CEO of Univest Corporation. We're looking forward to celebrating our 10th annivesary year with the community, and we're honored that Floyd, who is one of our long-time supporters, is here to help us kick off our year with an annivesary ride."
About the Univest Grand Prix
The 10th annivesary event of the Univest Grand Prix, North America's Pro Classic, will be held in Souderton on Saturday, September 8 and in Doylestown on Sunday, September 9. The professional event is one of only six International Cycling Union (UCI) sanctioned races in the United States. Coming on the heels of the United States Professional Championship over Labor Day weekend, the Univest Grand Prix will attract the top riders from the United States and around the world.
Although the 2007 edition will feature the top professional athletes from around the world, a few select amateur teams will still participate. The Univest Grand Prix will retain its unique focus on developing amateurs and young professionals by placing particular emphasis on the "Best Young Rider" competition. Youth development will also remain an important part of the weekend's activities, with riders visiting schools to help teach students about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle and bike safety. Children's sprint competitions in Souderton, Lansdale and Doylestown will be a highlight of the weekend.
A cornerstone of the weekend's community-based activities is the Cyclosportif 100K charity ride to support Indian Creek Foundation. During this ride, recreational cyclists travel the same route as the official Univest Grand Prix pros. It begins at 8:00 a.m. Saturday, September 8. Registration is available at www.univestgrandprix.com.
Patterned after the great classic races of Europe, the Univest Grand Prix reaches out to more than 14 communities. From its inception, the cycling event was developed to provide opportunities for young athletes to advance, while also uniting the towns throughout Bucks and Montgomery counties for a community celebration. This will continue to be the focus for years to come. For more information on the Univest Grand Prix, please visit www.univestgrandprix.com.
